We played NIM again today but with 10 penguins. We learnt that to work out how to win you need to start by thinking about the end of the game. The students knew that as the game went on they had to think ahead. They worked out if there were 3 penguins left they would win, but if their partner knew this strategy too they had to make it 5 penguins. So lots of maths thinking. We learnt that to work out how to win you need to start by thinking about the end of the game and then work back to earlier moves. Mrs Badham had fun too! Sometimes she won and sometimes her partner won. How did you win? This week we played some basic forms of the ancient game of Nim. You just need seven objects, such as counters or blocks. It is a game for two players. We put out 7 counters and decided who would go first. Each player took turns to take away either one or two counters. The player who took the last counter/s was the winner. There was lots of maths to talk about. We played until we worked out how to win and we talked about what we had to do to win. This game is easy to play at home and you will see how your child knows when they will be the winner! We also wondered does it matter who has the first turn? Everyone really enjoyed our annual Grandparents' Day. Thank you to all our visitors who came to see our concert and classroom. |
